Setting Dog Boundaries While Working From Home
If your dog cannot respect your work time, you may need to set a few boundaries.
If you are lucky enough to be working from home right now, your pup could be even more excited than you are. Sure, a few extra belly rubs are on the agenda, but you may also need a space to focus and get your work done without distraction. This can be harder than you think when your pup continually wants to be walked, played with, or loved on.
Setting Dog Boundaries While Working From Home
Work in an off-limits space.
There are several ways to create a boundary between your workspace and your play space, but you will have to decide which is best for your dog. You can define a space specifically for your dog to stay in throughout the day, or you can create one for yourself. If a closed door causes barking, scratching or crying - install a baby gate to prevent entering but allows for him to see you.
If he still cannot keep a peaceful distance, consider keeping him in his crate for a few 2 hours at a time. If this is your only option, make sure that you find a balance between crate-time and play-time.
Take breaks to play
Don’t spend your day ignoring your pup. Your pup isn’t the only one that needs regular breaks and exercise. In between conference calls, spreadsheets, and emails, take 10 minutes to burn off energy with your dog. If you have a yard, head outside to do a few sprints together. Grab the leash and go around the block 2-3 times as fast as you can. If you have the chance to break for longer than 10-15 minutes, take advantage of that time to throw the ball and play.
Avoid accidents
It can be easy to become wrapped up in work and not notice that your dog needs to go outside. Some dogs will even act out and pee in the house just to try and get your attention. For the first few days, you may want to keep your dog in his crate while you work. This will introduce a new schedule.
