Warning Signs That Stress is Hurting Your Cat

While some cats hide when they feel stressed, others act out or experience potentially dangerous side effects. It is your job to read your furry friend’s behavior and help eliminate the stressors. If eliminating them isn’t possible, consider easing your cat back into the situation in a more gentle and calm manner while continually working with him.

Remember that the smallest things can cause stress. A new human hanging around the house, a baby, a new pet, a schedule change, your emotions, new smells, anything new or different can be the trigger for your upset feline.

Warning Signs That Stress is Hurting Your Cat

Aggression

Aggression can come on quick and cause problems for your cat, your family, and other animals in your home. Hissing, clawing, and even biting can be a sign that your cat is stressed. Notice his tail position and how his ears are laying. Recognize any atypical vocalization, too. Do not overlook or ignore this behavior.

Tummy Troubles

Vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation are all signs of stress in an animal. Check with your vet to make sure medication is not needed.

Spraying

If your cat is peeing outside of his litter box, he either has a UTI or is suffering from stress. Again, your vet should rule out the UTI.

Excessive Grooming

Over-licking, constant scratching, and continuous biting at their body can be from bugs, but if that is not a possibility, it is probably stress. He may also shed excessively. Before your cat can cause permanent damage to his coat, schedule an appointment with the vet (and groomer) and try to get to the bottom of the new found stress.

Hiding and Heightened Heart Rate

If hiding is unusual for your cat, stress could be the reason. Pay attention to your cat’s breathing, anything more than 20-30 breaths per minute means that his heart rate and pulse are on high alert.

How to Help

  • Offer a safe space for your cat to be alone (or with you).
  • Feed him high quality food.
  • Encourage exercise and play time every day.
  • Seek help.
