How to Deal with Litter Box Stink
We all know what it smells like to walk into someone’s house that smells like cat. It doesn’t matter how much you love the furry little creatures, a stinky house is quite unwelcoming. If you have a new (or old) cat and are hoping to prevent your house from being known as the “The House With a Cat,” then make sure that you take action against the odor! Your nose will become adapt to the smell, so even if you think everything smells rosy, keep up the routine. You don’t want your guests holding their noses!
How to Deal with Litter Box Stink
Let Go of the Plastic and Use Liners
Plastic litter boxes absorb smells and hold in odors. Get rid of the plastic and opt for aluminum or metal instead. There are options that contain filters for a higher price tag of course - and they are worth the money if your space is not well ventilated. If you aren’t ready to let go of the plastic, use a litter box liner to collect the litter and smell every week. You still need to clean daily, but at the end of the week you just scoop up the bag and toss it in the trash.
Scoop Twice a Day
This goes without saying, right? The more you scoop, the less lingering smell you will have. Besides being common sense, it’s not a hard habit to achieve. Scoop that box every morning and every afternoon/evening!
Change Litter Weekly
It’s easy to become lazy on this step. It saves money to go longer, and it’s time consuming to make the change. But this step is crucial for keeping a fresh-smelling home. You need to completely empty your cat’s litter box and wash it out before refilling it with new litter. This should happen every single week.
Wash the Box Monthly — Sprinkle baking soda at the bottom.
Each moth, after washing the box, use baking soda to line the bottom before adding in the new litter. The baking soda is a natural way to absorb smells and will do no harm to your kitty.
Baking Soda
You can also mix being soda in with your cat’s litter as an added layer of odor protection.
Ventilate the Area
Try to keep the litter box in a small area with a window. The ventilation will help suck the odors from the room instead of building them and pushing them into the rest of the house.
Air Out Your House
It doesn’t matter what season it is, if the temperatures are at all tolerable, air out your house. It does not have to be for more than 15 minutes a day, but that fresh air will help keep your house from smelling like a giant litter box.
