Easy Homemade Valentine's Day Dog Treats

You can't forget about your furry, funny Valentine this February 14th. Even if your schedule is busy, you can find some free time to whip up a few of these easy treats for your furbaby.

5 Easy Valentine's Day Dog Treats

My Life Cook Book has a wonderful Valentine’s Day Treat for you to mix together for your furry four-legged love. These 'Strawberry Hearts' include both strawberries and coconut oil, which are great for your dog.  Strawberries are full of antioxidants, vitamin C, and fiber. Coconut oil has anitfungal, antibiotic, and antiviral properties. (You can read more about the benefits of coconut oil on Dogs Naturally Magazine.)  Remember to limit coconut oil to 1 teaspoon per 10lbs of dog each day.

According the the AKC, “Strawberries are not only a healthy sweet treat for your dog, but by giving them the berries you are also helping them to stay healthy in more ways than one. Over time, fresh fruit helps with aging, strengthens the immune system and helps with weight management.”  (However, never give canned strawberries, or any version that is kept in syrup.)

You can mix up this treat by using blueberries, frozen bananas, apple pieces, or even watermelon! (All of these delicious fruits are approved by the AKC.)

The Dog People (blog) has published a few tempting-to-try treats on their website, and our favorites were the “Fro-Yo, Yo” and the “Pomegranate Sweetheart Treats.”

The Fro-Yo, Yo was as easy as mixing up greek yogurt, a banana, peanut butter, and honey… and popping it in the freezer!  You can put the mixture into any shape mold you have on hand, but hearts would be the most festive.

The Pomegranate Sweethearts were only slightly more time consuming, but completely messier than the other recipes! (Pomegranates are a tad juicy.) These also need some oven time, so take that into consideration. You will make your own oat flour before tossing your pomegranate seeds into the food processor and pulsing with a few eggs. After forming a dough that needs to be rolled out, you will cut ‘cookies’ out for the oven.

If you are looking for a gluten-free cookie treat, look no farther! Gone To The Snow Dogs has created a fool-proof baked dog treat that you can bake without much mess. You will need rice flour, pureed beets, pureed sweet potatoes, an egg, and water. The ingredients combine to make an easy-to-roll, beautiful Valentine’s Day dough. Grab your favorite cookie cutters and cut out as many cookies as you’d like. I found that the dough can be easily frozen, too!

If your favorite dessert is a bowl of ice-cream, consider recreating it for your pup! Dog-Milk has a recipe that will have your dog begging for a lick. Plain yogurt, coconut butter, and the fruit of your choice (strawberries give a beautiful Valentine’s Day feel to the dish). After blending the ingredients together, you will freeze your ‘ice-cream’ for a few hours before scooping out a bowl for your Valentine. The Dog-Milk blog has several ice-cream flavors, so jump over there to pick the recipe that will best meet your dog’s cravings.
