Choosing the Right Leash for Your Dog

Shopping for a leash is not as simple as you think. They come in every size, fabric, color, and length. The same can be said for collars, harnesses, and leads. Randomly choosing one may have lasting consequences on training and your dog’s behavior. These products are not created equal, and finding the right one for your dog will help make everyone happier.

Before purchasing just one leash, you will want to evaluate a few things:

  1. Your dog’s age: a puppy will require different length leashes for different purposes. You may want one to use inside the house and another for walks outside.
  2. Training: The leash is used in training, and depending on your training program, you will need a specific leash.
  3. Your dog’s personality: Alpha dogs will need a stronger, shorter leash than a passive pup.
  4. Collar or harness? Certain leashes are meant to be paired with one over the other.

Choosing the Right Leash for Your Dog

Standard Leash

The American Kennel Club states that selecting a standard, straight leash from the wide variety available is mostly based on preference and budget, but it may be necessary to consider the size of your dog and the weight of the leash. (Smaller dogs don’t need a large, heavy leash, but larger dogs prone to pulling might require a heavier leash for better control.)

Slip Lead

This is an all-in-one collar and leash, but means that your dog has no identification on. Consider a separate collar for this purpose. Slip leads are rarely used because they present a strangling possibility, or can lead to your dog loosening the gap and running off. They are more commonly used during training, but can be utilized daily.

Adjustable Leash

These leashes have several loops on them to make it easy to shorten the leash. You can tether it to a chair while you enjoy a cafe lunch together!

Retractable Leash

Not ideal for busy sidewalks and untrained pups, retractable leashes work best when there is room to play. Long walks in the park, enjoying a trail walk together, or exploring a larger area allow the space for your dog to roam while still on leash.

Multi-Function Leash

There are several leashes that serve multiple purposes. There are those with reflective fabric for nighttime walking. There are running leashes that connect to a waist belt for you. There are shock-absorbing leashes. It seems that a new leash is released every year or more. If you are planning to bring your dog with you as you perform specific activities, go ahead and search for a leash that will work best for your furbaby!

If you are feeling overwhelmed, take a deep breath. The most important thing is to have a collar and leash for your dog, you can always try out different combinations later!
